Mary, out of the Ordinary (2010)

I created Mary, out of the Ordinary in 2010.

The stop motion video is a collage of Russian nesting dolls, shadowy card games, and the slowly turning pages of a modern prayer book.

I composed the soundtrack separately, using sampled sounds and field recordings, some of which I’d made at Mission Dolores Basilica. These two highly edited elements define the theatrical environment and support the unscripted component of the live performance: me, sitting in a chair onstage, reading, reciting, and stumbling between the Hail Mary and a children’s nursery rhyme. The end result is something like a trio performed by one. The piece received its premiere at the Sunshine Biscuit Factory and was reprised for two performances at The Marsh, San Francisco.
